My Mother Hid This Secret From Us for 15 Years
It was almost midnight when someone knocked on our front door.
Not once.
Three slow knocks.
My husband Daniel looked at me from across the living room.
“Are you expecting someone?”
I shook my head.
The house went completely quiet.
Then the knocking came again.
Daniel stood up slowly.
I could tell from his face that he was worried.
He walked toward the door while I stayed behind him.
“Who is it?” he called.
No one answered.
Daniel reached for the lock.
I whispered, “Don't open it.”
But he did.
There was a woman standing outside.
She was holding a small brown suitcase.
She looked exhausted.
And she was crying.
Daniel stared at her as if he had seen a ghost.
“Emily?” he whispered.
The woman nodded.
My stomach tightened.
I had never heard that name before.
Daniel stepped outside and closed the door halfway behind him.
I could hear them whispering.
Then Emily said one sentence clearly enough for me to hear.
I opened the door completely.
“Tell me what?”
Daniel turned toward me.
For the first time in twelve years of marriage, he couldn't look me in the eyes.
Emily reached into her suitcase.
She pulled out an old photograph.
Then she handed it to me.
In the picture, Daniel was standing beside Emily.
Both of them were much younger.
And between them stood a little boy.
A little boy who looked exactly like my husband.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he nodded.
Everything inside me went cold.
I thought that was the secret.
I was wrong.
My hands started shaking.
I opened it.
And the first line I read changed everything I thought I knew about my marriage.
